Sabalenka Powers Into Fourth Round at Indian Wells

Dominant from start to finish — Sabalenka sets up a mouth-watering clash with four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has marched into the last 16 of the Indian Wells Masters with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 victory over Romania's Jacqueline Cristian in 72 minutes.

The Belarusian was in fine form throughout, firing five aces to her opponent's two and making the most of Cristian's seven double faults. Sabalenka also had the edge when it came to converting break point opportunities — both players earned six chances, but the world number one capitalised on four of them while the Romanian managed just one.

In the first set, Sabalenka broke in the fourth game and appeared to be cruising, but Cristian fought back to level when serving at 5-4 down. It proved only a brief reprieve, as Sabalenka immediately broke again to close out the set. The second was even more straightforward — after trading the opening two games, the top seed reeled off five consecutive games to seal the win.

Her reward is a highly anticipated Tuesday showdown with 16th seed Naomi Osaka, who fought back from a set down to defeat Colombia's Camila Osorio 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Two four-time Grand Slam champions on the same side of the draw — it promises to be a treat.
