Djokovic Sets His Sights on LA 2028
At 41, most athletes are long retired — but Djokovic has his eyes firmly set on defending his Olympic gold in Los Angeles
Novak Djokovic has revealed that competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is firmly on his radar, describing it as one of his "long-term goals." The Serbian legend claimed the Olympic gold medal he had long chased at the Paris 2024 Games, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final to complete the coveted Golden Slam.
Despite the fact that he will be 41 years old by the summer of 2028, Djokovic is determined to give himself a shot at defending the title.
"It's one of the long-term goals — to make it to the Olympics. It would be nice," he said after his second-round victory over Kamil Majchrzak at Indian Wells on Saturday. "There's still a lot of time until then. I think at my age and at this stage of my career, every year feels longer than it does for younger players. But I'll try to get there. It's definitely one of my motivations, so I'll do my best to be there."
The Paris gold was Djokovic's second Olympic medal, having previously won bronze in Beijing in 2008. He suffered bronze medal match defeats in both 2012 and 2020, losing to Juan Martín del Potro and Pablo Carreño Busta respectively, while a first-round exit in 2016 — again at the hands of del Potro — left another chapter in his complicated Olympic story.
Only Andy Murray has ever successfully defended an Olympic singles title, winning gold in London in 2012 and repeating the feat in Rio four years later — a record Djokovic will now be targeting.
